Nikola Tesla was born 10th July 1856 in Smiljan, Austrian Empire (now Croatia) to Serbian parents.

His father was an Orthodox priest and writer. His mother was unschooled but was intelligent. Nikola’s interest in electrical invention was spurred by his mother. She was a homemaker and an inventor. She tinkered with a household appliance.
Nikola Tesla enrolled at the Austrian Polytechnic at the Graz University of Technology, Austria in 1875 and dropped out of school in March 1878. In 1879, he studied at the University of Prague for a year.
In 1881, Nikola moved to Budapest, Hungary and worked in the Budapest Telephone Exchange, a telegraph company. In 1882, he got another job in Paris. He worked with Continental Edison Company. In 1884, he emigrated to the US to manage the Edison Machine Works, a manufacturing division situated in New York City.
After leaving Edison Machine Works in 1885, he worked for arc lighting manufacturing and utility companies in Tesla’s name, the Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing. In 1887, he developed AC and induction motor. In 1889, he worked with many laboratories in New York and he established his own laboratories. From 1890 to 1906, he developed wireless power or electrical power without wires.
In 1891, Nikola invented the Tesla coil which is widely used today in radio and other electric types of equipment. He discovered X-rays in 1895, in 1896, Tesla designed the first AC hydroelectric power plants in the United States, at Niagara Falls.

Alternating Current (AC)
: Nikola Tesla claimed that current can change direction. He stated that energy is cyclic. He challenged Thomas Edison who was claiming that current flows only in one direction, direct current (DC).
Nikola Tesla invented teleautomaton which was a small wireless boat controlled by radio waves. The teleautomaton gave a new age of technology to one of radio signaling and robotic machines. Teleautomaton was dubbed by him in an electrical exhibition at Madison Square Garden.
The Induction Motor:
In 1887 and 1888, Nikola Tesla had an experimental shop in New York where he invented the induction motor with a rotating magnetic field that made unit drives for machines feasible which made AC power transmission an economic necessity. It is an AC electric motor. An induction motor uses alternating current and it has two parts a stator and a rotor. Induction motors are used for being durable, easy to maintain and cheap to run.

Adams Power Plant Transformer House in Niagara Falls, New York is a National Historic Landmarked building constructed in 1895. In the same year, he built it and the only remaining structure that was part of the historic Edward Dean Adams Power Plant, the first large-scale, alternating current electric generating plant in the world. The Adams Power Plant at start had three generators that were producing 5,000 horsepower each or 2,200 volts.
Nikola Tesla created the first neon sign. Nikola Tesla did not invent the fluorescent or neon lights (1910 by Georges Claude) but he did contribute to improving both inventions. He took the lights then created the first neon sign. At the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, he demonstrated neon light signs and how they can make unique designs and even form words.
In 1895, Nikola Tesla was working on developing a radio signal a distance of 50 miles but before he could finish, his lab burned down and the test delayed. Before he could rebuild his lab and his equipment, an Italian man named Guglielmo Marconi was working on wireless telegraphy and was granted a patent in 1896 for his device in England was able to secure the patent for the device. Tesla’s radio would have been stronger if he had been able to use it.
He found that he could transmit and receive powerful radio signals when they were tuned to resonate at the same frequency. Tesla’s boat was constructed with an antenna, which transmitted the radio waves coming from the command post where Tesla was standing.
Nikola Tesla experimented with shadowgraphs similar to those that later were to be used by Wilhelm Rontgen when he discovered X-rays in 1895. In 1894, Tesla started his investigation on what is now known as the x-ray, which at the time was still an unknown entity. Tesla invented his own vacuum tube (an x-ray bulb). He produced the first x-ray image using this technique and managed to obtain images of the human body, which he called shadowgraphs.
In 1913, Nikola Tesla received a patent for what he described as his most important invention. That invention was a turbine which is known today as the Tesla turbine, the boundary layer turbine or the flat-disk turbine. Turbines work by converting the kinetic energy of a fluid into another form of energy. In a wind turbine, the wind (the fluid) causes the blades to rotate. The blades, in turn, rotate a generator that converts the rotational energy into electricity. In this turbine, the smooth disks spin to generate energy. Tesla’s turbine doesn’t have any blades.
Tesla coil has the magnifying transmitter which was an advanced version. According to Nikola Tesla, this device was a very high-speed wireless transmission that produces electricity. It is an air-core, multiple-resonant transformer that can generate very high voltages.
In 1891, Tesla coil was invented. It is a tower, of any height, which uses coils to shoot lightning out into the air. Each coil has its own capacitor. A capacitor, like a battery that stores energy and build up the energy to create a spark gap then shoot the energy into the air like lightning bolts, send electric currents through the body which creates electron winds. Nikola Tesla died on 7th January 1943. Nikola Tesla was 86 years old and was found in his room at the New Yorker Hotel. His cause of death was listed as coronary thrombosis. Tesla was cremated and the ashes are displayed in a gold-plated sphere on a marble pedestal in the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade.
Tesla had never married, had spent his life creating, inventing and discovering.
